EPILEPSY STUDY INCRIMINATES ASPARTAME in  MEDICATIONS

The Pacific Epilepsy Society in affiliation with the Epileptic
Foundation of Maui has completed a seven year study on Epilepsy and
Seizures, finding that epilepsy is at an all time high in Hawaii and
the western states and Pacific Ocean Territories. There has been
a100% increase over the two previous years.  See EFM Survey, Freedom

The most profound reason for the spectacular increase in seizures is
the inclusion of the drug   ASPARTAME in with the new larger sized
anti-seizure drugs: DILANTIN, DEPACOAT, TEGRATOL and several others
produced by major pharmaceutical corporations.  In 2007 the
manufacture of Dilantin changed the description of the 100 mg.
Dilantin,  changed the 100 mg white capsule with red stripe to a much
larger white capsule, orange on one end, which contains 100 mg of the
drug, plus aspartame. 150 people who took the new Dilantin capsule
found the seizure rate increased in every case. The Chemical
Pharmaceutical Engineer employee, in fear of his job would not reveal
his name, but said they were adding aspartame.   He said the new
larger orange & white Dilantin is also labeled 100 mg,

Dr. Allen Stein, Neurosurgeon, President of the Epilepsy Foundation
of Hawaii (a separate organization from the above) is sympathetic to
the makers of ASPARTAME and routinely prescribes these drugs. I
believe this contributes to the increase of epilepsy in these areas.

Yes, that's the web  site of the manufacturer.  They always use the
word scare mongering.  Here is my Open Letter to

organizations have tried to get them to  answer my letter but they
have refused.  I thought about exposing their stumbling block, but
then it calls attention to their site.  I've also sent information to
the Justice Department and they have yet to even answer even though
they are in violation of Title 18, Section 1001.

You know they have the money to influence anyone they want. For every
physician who can testify on the toxicity of  aspartame they can pay
two  others who will rebut it.  You know what they call people who do
it for money?    The NutraSweet Company has always had Dr. Robert
Moser to dish out the
propaganda
and in 2004 a Rico suit was  filed against the NutraSweet Company and
Moser but they got out of it.

I'll send another note to the Justice Department.  Also,  about those
doctors in New Zealand who wrote to the Lancet,  a  lot of us tried
to find them and couldn't.   This is what I mean, they can always get
somebody to  publish  or testify.     A good example is the Burdock
Study which they financed using their flacks to stumble the public
into thinking aspartame

Referring to Dr Woodrow C Monte's article about methanol neural
degenerations as "seminal" was very well put, because with an Eminent
Scientist like himself drawing a partial background to build upon I
can go on to mention several ways in which Aspartame is far worse
than methanol.

The Di Keto Piperazine ring isomer of Aspartame, consisting of that
entire Aspartame molecule wrapped around upon itself and doubly
bonded to itself, is a far more potent and farther reaching
polymerizer of proteins, than formaldehyde. As a matter of
note: Many plastics chemical substrates are also Diketopiperazines,
because of their extreme polymer reactivity.
Surgeons operating upon Aspartame brain tumors often note a white
plastic being formed throughout those Aspartame afflicted brains!

The next metabolic step in that methyl alcohol toxicity is
that formaldehyde when formed in the human, is then very rapidly
oxidized, metabolized into formic acid, Fire Ant Poison: Which can be
such a potent poisoning that a single fire ant can sometimes kill a
human weighing millions of times more than itself.
This entire chain methanol of poisonings occurs 75% within the
mitochondria, which usually are about only 1% of cellular volume.
This formic acid, then shatters mitochondria, killing that cell and
diffuses on into many more cells, until it has created a blister of
dead tissue: Why it is called then called a blister poison!

From an Autoimmunity standpoint, your macrophages (Captains of
Immune responses) then are stimulated by all of these: polymerized
neural tissues, (some further denatured with Di Keto Piperazine,)
and various fragments of now denatured human nervous system tissues
of every type.

Because dicarboxylic acid neural excito toxins(from Aspartame,
including its diketopiperazine) do not cross the blood brain
barrier, but rather, are secreted into the ventricles by the choroid
plexus, many of those areas mentioned by Dr Monte are the ones
extremely afflicted by these Aspartame neural degenerations, to
produce symptoms and disabilities from those specific areas arising,
before plasticizing of the entire brain becomes specifically noticed,
because diffuse plasticizing causes diffuse mental disabilities,
while those structures mentioned by Dr Monte cause well defined
syndromes and symptoms, beyond mental degenerations.

Dr. Martini,

Jere E. Goyan, Ph.D., who was Commissioner of the FDA in 1980, was at
my condominium in Novato, California when he received the call from
the Reagan transition team. My recollection is that is was 3 AM and
the woman's name was Mary Francis Wright. Dr. Goyan told me that she
told him that his services were no longer needed and that he needed
to have his letter of resignation to Mr. Reagan on Inauguration day.
He said that he was also told to vacate his office before the
Inauguration as that Mr. Reagan wanted to make it clear that there
was going to be changes. Mark Novitvh, MD, was appointed acting
Commissioner and Dr. Goyan was to stay for a month to help with the
transition. He later told me that he was never consulted about
anything after Inauguration day.

I have heard from various sources that Rumsfield was quoted as saying
that "Goyan must go". I have also heard that the reason that Dr.
Goyan became the first Commissioner to be fired at the change of an
administration is that Rumsfield was concerned that he would not
approve aspartame because of his position on cyclamate. I have heard
that there was an executive order from the White House concerning
aspartame after Dr, Goyan resigned. I have no direct knowledge about
the Rumsfield quote or concern or the executive order.

I married Dr. Goyan in 1988 and he passed away January 2007.

It's a well known fact aspartame triggers seizures. The Community
Nutrition Institute petitioned the FDA in l986 to ban aspartame
because of the seizures and the fact that so many were going blind on
aspartame from the methanol. Someone at an FDA meeting said the FDA
were ready to do so, but it was taken all the way to the Supreme
Court showing you the influence of the aspartame industry. The FDA
originally revoked the petition for

CEO of Searle and said he would call in his markers as discussed in
the Congressional Record. He was on President Reagan's Transition
Team and the day after Reagan took office he appointed Dr. Arthur
Hull Hayes to become FDA Commissioner and over-rule the Board of
Inquiry. Knowing it would take 30 days to get Hayes there he removed
the power of FDA to do anything about aspartame by Executive
Order. Hayes over-ruled the Board of Inquiry and then went to work
for the PR Agency of the manufacturer for $1000.00 a day on a ten
year contract, quite a reward for this despicable act of poisoning
the world. He has refused to talk to the press ever since. All this
is documented in the aspartame documentary, Sweet Misery: A Poisoned

When Dr. Roberts wrote his first book he quoted his first press
conference where he said if something wasn't done immediately in 5 or
10 years we would have a world plague. It was Dr. Roberts who wrote
the medical text on it, Aspartame Disease: An Ignored Epidemic,
www.sunsentpress.com over 1000 pages including a chapter on seizures
and drug interaction. His new book on 50 years of research is
"Protecting Mankind: One Physician's Quest" at the same web site
which has his other publicaitons and tapes.

I would suggest you fill out the Medwatch form for the FDA on your
case, the only way to get it recorded, not they will do
anything. They are entirely on the side of the manufacturer and do
not have the courage to protect the people. Unfortunately when those
responsible to solve the problem ARE the problem its a sad commentary
on betrayal of public health. They violated the Delaney Amendment
which says you cannot put anything in food you know will cause
cancer, as admitted by their own FDA toxicologist, Dr. Adrian Gross,
to Congress in l985.

In 2002 I petitioned the FDA to remove aspartame based on the fact
they know the toxicity of aspartame and have lied to the public all
these years. They had 180 days to answer it and again violated the
law by refusing to do so. They were instructed not to send me a
packet of aspartame propaganda which has been rebutted for years, and
they know is untrue. On October 23rd of this year I sent them by
certified mail an amendment to the petition to ban based on an
imminent health hazard, showing 13 more studies in the last 24 months
showing toxicity. They only have a couple of weeks to answer. They
must answer the original petition and the amendment.

You have to get him off this addictive excitoneurotoxic carcinogenic
drug. We are there to support him and educate him on the list
mentioned. Because of withdrawal if there are any problems Essence

addiction cases. The methanol is classified as a
narcotic. Aspartame liberates free methyl alcohol causing chronic
methanol poisoning. This effects the dopamine system of the brain
causing addiction.

"In the keynote address by the EPA at the World Environmental
Conference, it was announced that there was an epidemic of multiple
sclerosis and system lupus and they did not understand what toxin was
causing this to become rampant across the United States.

"When the temperature of aspartame exceeds 86 degrees F, the wood
alcohol in aspartame converts to formaldehyde and then to formic

poison found in the sting of fire ants. The methanol toxicity mimics
multiple sclerosis; thus, people are being diagnosed with multiple
sclerosis in error. Multiple sclerosis is not a death sentence;
methanol toxicity is.

"Systemic lupus has become almost as rampant as multiple sclerosis,
especially in Diet Coke and Diet Pepsi drinkers. With methanol
toxicity, the victims usually drink three to four 12 oz cans per day,
some even more. In the cases of systemic lupus, which is triggered
by aspartame, the victim usually does not know the aspartame is the
culprit. The victim continues its use and aggravates the lupus to
such a degree, that it sometimes becomes life threatening. When
people quit using aspartame, those with systemic lupus usually become
asymptomatic. Unfortunately, this disease cannot be reversed. On
the other hand, in the case of those diagnosed with multiple
sclerosis, (when in reality, the disease is methanol toxicity), most
of the symptoms disappear. In some cases, vision and hearing have
returned. This also applies to cases of Tinnitus. If you are using
Aspartame (NutraSweet, Equal, Spoonful, etc.) and you suffer from
fibromyalgia symptoms, spasms, shooting pains, numbness in your legs,
cramps, vertigo, dizziness, headaches, tinnitus, joint pain,
depression, anxiety attacks, slurred speech, blurred vision or memory
loss, you probably have "Aspartame Disease".

"The Ambassador of Uganda noted that their sugar industry is adding
aspartame. He continued by saying that one of the industry leader's
sons could no longer walk due in part to product usage. This is a
very serious problem. Additionally, during a visit to a hospice, a
nurse said that six of her friends, who were heavy Diet Coke drinks,
had all been diagnosed with MS. This is beyond coincidence!

"Here is the problem. There were Congressional Hearings when
Aspartame was originally included as a sweetener in 100 different
products. Since this initial hearing, there have been two subsequent
hearings. Nothing has been done. The drug and chemical lobbies have
very deep pockets. Now, there are over 5,000 products containing
this chemical and the patent has expired. At the time of this first
hearing, people were going blind. The methanol in the Aspartame
converts to formaldehyde in the retina of the eye. Formaldehyde is
grouped in the same class of drugs as cyanide and arsenic - deadly
poisons. Unfortunately, it just takes longer to quietly kill, but is
killing people and causing neurological problems. Aspartame changes
the brain's chemistry. It is the reason for severe seizures. This
drug change the dopamine level of the brain. Imagine what this drug
does to patients suffering from Parkinson's disease. This drug also
causes birth defects.

"There is absolutely no reason to use this product. It is "not a
diet product"/ The Congressional record said, "It makes you crave
carbohydrates and will make you FAT." Dr. H. J. Roberts, a diabetic
specialist and expert on Aspartame poisoning, states that when he
took patients off of Aspartame, their average weight loss was 19
pounds per person. Aspartame is especially deadly for
diabetics. All physicians know what wood alcohol will do to a
diabetic. We find that physicians believe that they have patients
with retinopathy when, in fact, it's caused by the Aspartame. The
Aspartame keeps the blood sugar level out of control, causing many
patients to go into a coma. Unfortunately, many have died. It was
reported at the Conference of the American College of Physicians that
those patients that switched from saccharin to an Aspartame product
had eventually gone into a coma. Their physicians could not get
their blood sugar levels under control. The patients suffered acute
memory loss, and, eventually, coma and death. Memory loss is due to
the fact that aspartic acid and phenylalanine are neurotoxins without
the other amino acids found in protein. Thus is goes past the blood
brain barrier and deteriorates the neurons of the brain. Dr. Russell
Blaylock, a neurosurgeon, said "The ingredients stimulate the neurons
of the brain to death, causing brain damage of varying degrees."

"Dr. Blaylock and Dr. Roberts will be writing a position paper with
some case histories and it will be posted on the Internet. According
to the Conference of the American College of Physicians, "We are
talking about a plague of neurological diseases caused by this deadly
poison." Dr. Roberts realized what was happening when aspartame was
first marketed. He reported, "My diabetic patients are suffering
memory loss, confusion and severe vision loss." At the Conference,
doctors admitted not knowing why. They had wondered by seizures were
rampant (the phenylalanine in aspartate breaks down the seizure
threshold and depletes serotonin, which causes manic depression,
panic attacks, rage and violence). Just before the Conference,
Norway asked for a possible antidote for this poison because they are
experiencing so many problems in their country. This poison' is now
available in 90 plus countries worldwide. Fortunately, speakers and
ambassadors at the conference from different nations have pledged their help.

Take anything that contain aspartame back to the store. Monsanto,
the creator of aspartame knows how deadly it is. They fund the
American Medical Association, American Dietetic Association, Congress
and the Conference of the American College of Physicians.

On November 15, l996 the New York Times ran an article on how the
American Dietetic Association takes money from the food industry to
endorse their products. Therefore, they cannot criticize any
additives or tell about their link to Monsanto. How bad is this? A
mother who had a child on NutraSweet was told to get off the
product. The child was having grand mal seizures daily. The mother
called her physician, who called the ADA and was told not to take the
child off of NutraSweet. The mother can not be convinced that the
Aspartame is causing the seizures. Every time someone gets off
Aspartame, seizures stop.

There are 92 documented symptoms of aspartame, from coma to
death. The majority of them are neurological because Aspartame
destroys the nervous system. Aspartame Disease is partially behind
some of the mystery of the Desert Storm health problems. The burning
tongue and other problems discussed many cases can be directly
related to the consumption of aspartame. Several thousand pallets of
diet drinks were shipped to the Desert Storm
troops. (Remember: heat can liberate the methanol from the
aspartame at 86 degrees F). These diet drinks sat in the 120 degree
F Arabian sun for weeks at a time on pallets. The serviceman and
women drank them all day long. All of their symptoms are identical
to aspartame poisoning.

Additionally, Dr. Roberts says, "Consuming Aspartame at the time of
conception can cause birth defects." According to Dr. Louis Elsas,
Pediatrician and Professor of Genetics at Emory University, in his
testimony before Congress, the phenylalanine concentrates in the
placenta, causing mental retardation. In the original lab tests,
animals developed brain tumors; phenylalanine breaks down in DKP, a
brain tumor agent. When Dr. Esposito was lecturing on Aspartame, one
physician in the audience, a neurosurgeon said, "When brain tumors
are removed and studies, high levels of Aspartame were found in them."

"Stevia or Xylitol, a sweet food and "not an additive" helps in the
metabolism of sugar. It would be ideal for diabetics and has now
been approved as a dietary supplement by the FDA. For years, the FDA
has outlawed this sweet food, because of their loyalty to
Monsanto. If it says "sugar free" on the label - do not even consider it."

of world famous doctors. A 3 year study on 1,800 rats by Dr. Morando
Soffritti at an Italian cancer research institute
concluded aspartame is a multipotential carcinogen. It was peer
reviewed by seven world experts. For his work Dr. Soffritti was
honored with an award at the Mount Sinai Institute in NYC earlier
this year as he released a new study showing it only takes a small
amount of aspartame to trigger cancer and babies who survive a
pregnant women who used it can grow up to cancer.

Here are the summaries of these two important studies that confirmed
the carcinogenicity of aspartame that FDA acknowledged in original studies.

The first ERF study (2005) was conducted on 1800 Sprague-Dawley rats
(100-150/per sex/per group). In order to simulate daily human intake,
aspartame was added to the standard rat diet in quantities of 5000,
2500, 100, 500, 20, 4, and 0 mg/Kg of body weight. Treatment of the
animals began at 8 weeks of age and continued until spontaneous
death. The results show that APM causes a statistically significant,
dose-related increase of lymphomas/leukemias and malignant tumors of
the renal pelvis in females and malignant tumors of peripheral nerves
in males. These results demonstrate for the first time that APM is a
carcinogenic agent, capable of inducing malignancies at various dose
levels, including those lower than the current acceptable daily
intake (ADI) for humans (50 mg/kg of body weight in the US, 40 mg/kg
of body weight in the EU).

The second ERF study (2007) was conducted on 400 Sprague-Dawley rats
(70-95/per sex/per group). In order to simulate daily human intake,
aspartame was added to the standard rat diet in quantities of 100,
20, and 0 mg/Kg of body weight. Treatment of the animals began on the
12th day of fetal life until natural death. The results of the second
study show an increased incidence of lymphomas/leukemias in female
rats with respect to the first study. Moreover, the study shows that
when lifespan exposure to APM begins during fetal life, the age at
which lymphomas/leukemias develop in females is anticipated. For the
first time, a statistically significant increase in mammary cancers
in females was also observed in the second study. The results of this
transplacental carcinogenicity bioassay not only confirm, but also
reinforce the first experimental demonstration of APMs multipotential
carcinogenicity.

The National Soft Drink Association (now American Beverage)
originally protested to Congress against aspartame approval. Their
objections cover many pages in the Congressional Record of 5-7-85.

Coverup is customary for the criminals who concoct this poison and
feed it to half the world. In August the New Zealand Soil & Health
and Safe Food Campaign brought me to their beautiful land for a 3-week

I wish to request a full inquiry into the health effects of aspartame.

After suffering debilitating physical and psychological symptoms for over four months, my diagnosis came by chance as I was desperate for answers on my deteriorating medical condition. When googling ‘aspartame’ and finding thousands of websites warning me of the effects of this chemical, I immediately stopped consuming the sugar free chewing gum and diet coke, both of which contained the neurotoxin - aspartame (otherwise known as 951).

Numerous unnecessary trips to the doctors, tests for Diabetes, Lupus, Multiple Sclerosis, electrolyte imbalances, mineral deficiencies (all returned negative) and within 48 hours of removing aspartame from my diet, my excruciating limb discomfort starting subsiding. Just the first sign of recovery. One change to my lifestyle, and within the following two weeks, every single one of both my physical and psychological symptoms disappeared.

I believe my experience with aspartame is just the tip of the iceberg and there are most certainly other people in New Zealand who are unknowingly going through similar health problems I did due to their consumption of aspartame.

Since my case became public I have received many emails from other potential victims. One case in particular, mimicked my four month ordeal, and like I did, has become progressively healthy since cutting aspartame from his diet. Other emails are from concerned relatives who are recognising similar psychological signs in their family members.

Unfortunately these victims alongside the medical profession are simply not identifying these health problems alongside their intake of 951.

In some respects, the severity of my symptoms alerted me to the fact that I wasn’t just suffering from a minor problem, such as stress, or spending too much time in front of a computer. Across New Zealand, the above circumstances are being confused with aspartame poisoning.

The 92 symptom list released by the American Food and Drug Administration themselves is a clear indication as to what aspartame has been responsible for, and what I believe is causing detrimental health effects to many people, most importantly the children of New Zealand.

Brief history of aspartame

Originally listed by the Pentagon as a bio chemical warfare agent, aspartame today can now be found in over 5000 products on our super market shelves.

Commercially sold under NutraSweet, Canderel, Wrigley’s, aspartame is slowly making it’s way into vitamins (for children!!) and over the counter drugs.

Because it contains no calorific value, it is considered a healthy option, and encouraged as a sugar alternative for Diabetics, and people suffering from Obesity.

Concerns over aspartames toxicity meant that for eight years the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) denied it’s approval, essentially keeping it off the world market. NutraSweet has been at the centre of intense controversy almost since July 18 1981, the day Arthur Hull Hayes Jr approved its use in dry foods. In rendering his decision, Hayes overturned the public board of inquiry which voted 3-0 to ban aspartame because research had not proved with ‘reasonable certainty’ that the sweetener was safe.

An eight-month United Press International investigation not only turned up scientific concerns, but also raised questions about the way the product was approved. Firstly in regards to the independence and depth of industry funded research, and secondly about the ‘revolving door’ relationship between FDA officials including former commissioner Arthur Hull Hayes Jr and the food and drink industries.

Why is aspartame harmful?

Aspartame components are 50% Phenylalanine; 40% Aspartic Acid and 10% Methanol

Methanol is a dangerous poison that cannot be legally be added to food in any civilized country worldwide. Cumulatively, methanol is known to remove the insulation from nerve axons, producing symptoms identical to Multiple Sclerosis, a condition I was tested for more than once during the 4 months I was seeking answers on my medical condition.

Methanol enters the body’s cells and is converted to formaldehyde, an undetectable toxin and recognized cancer causing agent of the highest order (Group 1) by the International Agency for Research of Cancer. Humans lack the enzymes which prevent methanol from metabolizing into formaldehyde, the process which takes place as soon as aspartame is consumed.

No diagnostic procedures can detect a protein molecule damaged by formaldehyde, yet the damaged molecule loses function, hence the reason I could not get a toxic reading in my blood count. Subsequently, damaged protein molecules are not tolerated by the immune system.

In response to these concerns, spokespeople for the soft drink beverage industry and for the NZFSA claim that there is a large amount of methanol consumed in the normal diet and that a ‘little’ more from aspartame will do no harm. However, one can of aspartame sweetened diet coke yields 16 milligrams of methanol, more than twice the amount of methanol from other sources in a typical diet.

Furthermore, methanol consumed within fruit is bound by pectin, a substance attached to the methanol molecule so the toxic breakdown does not occur independently. As well as this, fruit contains ethanol, the natural antidote for methanol.

Since scientists discovered that humans lack the liver enzyme which metabolizes methanol, (this enzyme is present in animals) this toxin has been forbidden in foods and must always be packaged with a label showing a skull and crossbones, the universal symbol for poison.

Requests to lawmakers:

• Warning labels on products containing aspartame

• Internet database identifying products containing aspartame and identifying the possible side effects of aspartame consumption

• Medical profession to be fully educated and alerted to the symptoms of aspartame poisoning

• Removal of all sugar free sodas containing aspartame from schools

• Complete list made of ALL medications and over the counter prescription drugs containing aspartame to be widely publicized, and included on internet database

I also recommend the Government fund a study on the formaldehyde-producing ability of aspartame under in vivo conditions done by independent scientists, state-sponsored and open to observers of both sides.

As a fellow legislator and member of the New Mexico State Senate, I
write to you now to say that I support your efforts to ban aspartame. I am
concerned that there is incontrovertible medical evidence that ingesting
aspartame, which includes methanol and formaldehyde, is doing entirely
avoidable, terrible, medical damage, particularly in causing
neurodegenerative illnesses. An ordinary precautionary principle would
strongly indicate that it should be off the market until proven completely
safe, and not just by studies paid for by industry supporters.

Unfortunately, the FDA has shown no interest in rescinding its
approval thus far. Hawaii, though, is in a strong position to limit or
entirely prevent it from being imported in products coming from the U.S.
mainland and foreign countries. Please do not give in to the corporate
lobbyists theories of federal pre-emption; they were advanced by
corporations in New Mexicos legislature in 2006 and in 2007 and succeeded in
killing the bills which I carried.

I hope you will give your bill a do pass in your Health Committee.
This will also send a very strong message to the FDA Commissioner that
corporate theories and corporate misrepresentations are not going to prevail
in Honolulu, even if they have temporarily succeeded in Santa Fe!

Among the many ironies of our modern world is that Gerald Ford
awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom-America,s highest civilian
honor-to Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld on January 19, 1977. Just
a few weeks later on March 8, Rumsfeld became the CEO of G.D. Searle
to take point on a mission to force the Food and Drug Administration
to approve for human consumption a known carcinogen and neurotoxic poison.

Mission accomplished: Today some 9,000 commonly consumed products are
laced with this weapon of mass misery and millions of people live
with chronic illnesses linked to the artificial sweetener aspartame.

Today, Donald Rumsfeld is known throughout the world as the zealous
U.S. Secretary of Defense who is waging a global "war on terror" in
search of "terrorists" and "weapons of mass destruction." Most
people, however, are not aware that Rumsfeld himself unleashed a
chemical weapon of mass destruction upon the world in 1981-and it,s
still out there destroying people all over the world. That "WMD" is
aspartame and it has been scientifically and anecdotally linked to
millions of chronic illnesses and deaths.

The evidence shows that, with full knowledge of aspartame,s
neurotoxicity and carcinogenicity, Rumsfeld, as the CEO of G.D.

Searle, Co., "called in his markers" to achieve U.S. Food and Drug
Administration (FDA) approval for the artificial sweetener aspartame,
better known by its trade name "NutraSweet."

Consumer advocate attorney Jim Turner, who was instrumental in the
1969 banning of cyclamate in the U.S. for its link to various forms
of cancer, met with representatives of aspartame approval petitioner
Searle in 1974. The main topic of discussion was neuroscientist Dr.
John Olney,s 1971 study which showed that aspartic acid caused
lesions in the brains of infant mice. According to Turner, arguably
the world,s foremost authority on aspartame,s dubious legal history,
Rumsfeld was apparently hired by Searle for one specific purpose: To
obtain FDA approval for aspartame.

Betty Martini is the director of Mission Possible, a worldwide
consumer advocacy organization formed in 1992 as a voice for those
demanding that the FDA reverse its approval of aspartame and order
its removal from foods, beverages and medical preparations. Martini
is even more bold in her charges against Rumsfeld. Martini believes
the Washington insider, former three-term U.S. Rep. From Illinois
(1962-1968), secretary of defense (1975-1977) and executive assistant
to President Gerald Ford, was hired by Searle because, "He was
willing to get a deadly chemical poison, aspartame, approved for
human consumption"

Background

In December, 1965 Searle chemist James Schlatter discovered aspartame
while working on an ulcer drug. The substance, comprised of 50
percent synthetic phenylalanine, 40 percent synthetic aspartic acid
and 10 percent methanol, was about 200 times sweeter than sugar by
weight and had no calories. By spring, 1967, Searle began conducting
safety trials in preparation for petitioning the FDA for product approval.

Soon after the trials began, lab animals (monkeys and mice) began
experiencing adverse effects ranging from brain lesions and tumors to
seizures and death. Yet Searle petitioned the FDA for aspartame
approval in February, 1973. According to Turner, Searle provided the
FDA with over 100 studies claiming they proved aspartame was "safe."
Independent analyses of these studies, however, proves conclusively
that aspartame is actually a dangerous, neurotoxic, carcinogenic and
highly-addictive drug.

Trusting Searle,s promise that aspartame was safe, the FDA approved
the limited use of aspartame in dry goods on July 26, 1974. Turner
and Dr. Olney formally objected to the approval. Their petition
triggered an FDA investigation of Searle,s lab practices which proved
that Searle had provided the FDA with inaccurate conclusions
resulting from manipulated data derived from poorly-designed studies.
The FDA reversed its decision to approve aspartame in dry goods.

On January 10, 1977, the FDA formally requested that the U.S.
Department of Justice convene a federal grand jury to determine if
Searle should be criminally indicted for "concealing material facts
and making false statements" with regard to its petition for
aspartame approval.

Among the many charges FDA investigators made about Searle,s shoddy
lab practices was how rats that developed tumors would undergo
surgical removal of the tumors and then be placed back into the study
as if nothing had happened to them.

The grand jury investigation was led by U.S. Attorney Samuel Skinner.
In July 1, 1977, while the investigation was being conducted, Skinner
left the Justice Department and took a job with Sidley & Austin-the
law firm representing Searle. The statute of limitations eventually
ran out and the grand jury disbanded without reaching any conclusions
regarding Searle and its lab practices.

Amid this controversy, Rumsfeld was hired as Searle CEO on March 8,
1977 and immediately began cleaning house. Rumsfeld, who had no
previous business executive experience before becoming CEO of Searle,
reorganized several departments in the company and fired many of its
high-level managers, replacing them with other politically-connected
Washington, D.C., insiders.

Though the controversies deepened and the evidence proving the
poisonous nature of his company,s product continued to accumulate,
Rumsfeld and his team continued to push for FDA approval of aspartame.

A team of FDA investigators headed by Jerome Bressler attempted to
block Rumsfeld, et. al, by publishing what has become known as the
"Bressler Report" on August 1, 1977. The report cited several
instances where Searle intentionally mislead the FDA in its petition
for marketplace approval of aspartame. The FDA then formed a public
board of inquiry (PBOI) in 1979 to rule on the myriad safety issues
surrounding aspartame.

By this time, FDA investigators and independent scientists had
exhaustively reviewed the Searle studies and additional studies had
been conducted. There was no doubt, based upon objective analyses of
evidence that had accumulated for over a decade, that aspartame was
deathly poisonous to lab animals and caused a statistically
significant number of them to develop tumors.

On September 30, 1980, the PBOI concluded that aspartame should not
be approved pending further investigation of its link to the
formation of brain tumors and that the FDA "has not been presented
with proof of reasonable certainty that aspartame is safe for use as
a food additive."

The coup

Ronald Reagan was sworn in as president January 21, 1981. Rumsfeld,
while still CEO at Searle, was part of Reagan,s transition team. This
team hand-picked Dr. Arthur Hull Hayes, Jr., to be the new FDA
commissioner. Dr. Hayes, a pharmacologist, had no previous experience
with food additives before being appointed director of the FDA. He,
like Rumsfeld, did, however, have experience with chemical warfare
studies while connected to the Department of Defense. According to
The Washington Post, Hayes was, "one of a number of doctors who
conducted drugs tests for the Army on volunteers.to determine the
effect of a mind-disorienting drug called CAR 301,060," at Fort
Detrick, Maryland.

The Post further explained why Hayes was the perfect choice to
politically force the approval of aspartame: "According to a
declassified 1976 report prepared by the Army Inspector General,
Hayes had planned a research study to develop the mind-altering CAR
301,060 as a crowd control agent."

The report, detailing Hayes activities beginning in 1972, further
indicated that Hayes was involved in similar biochemical mind control
research studies until being named FDA director.

One of Hayes, first official acts as FDA chief was to approve the use
of aspartame as an artificial sweetener in dry goods July 18, 1981.
In order to accomplish this feat, Hayes had to overlook the scuttled
grand jury investigation of Searle, overcome the Bressler Report,
ignore the PBOI,s recommendations and pretend aspartame did not
chronically sicken and kill thousands of lab animals. Hayes, left his
post at the FDA in November, 1983, amid accusations that he was
accepting corporate gifts for political favors. Just before leaving
office in scandal, Hayes approved the use of aspartame in beverages.
According to The Post, Hayes, next job was in the private sector
where he served as a high-paid senior medical advisor for Searle,s
public relations firm.

The aftermath

Within weeks of aspartame,s approval for use in beverages, cans of
diet sodas and other sweet drinks were on the market. To help sell
Americans on using the artificial sweetener, intense advertising
campaigns began programming the public to believe that sugar has lots
of calories; calories make us fat and NutraSweet has no
calories-therefore it won,t make us fat.

Based upon this almost universally-accepted oversimplification of
biochemical reality, aspartame has enjoyed 22 years of marketplace
success and is now in an estimated 7,000 to 9,000 commonly-consumed
products in at least 100 countries. When Searle was absorbed by
Monsanto in 1985, Rumsfeld reportedly received a $12 million bonus.

Not surprisingly, the same adverse reactions seen in lab animals in
the 60s and 70s are now being seen in the general population. In his
first book on aspartame (1990), Dr. H.J. Roberts stated that in five
or 10 years we would have a worldwide plague on our hands if we do
not remove aspartame from our food supply. With the printing of
"Aspartame Disease: An Ignored Epidemic (2001), Dr. Roberts declared
that the world is, indeed, plagued by a global epidemic of symptoms
associated with aspartame use.

* Aspartame is being identified by a growing number of researchers
and physicians as an underlying cause of chronic ill health in
America and other countries throughout the world.

* It interacts with other substances such as pharmaceutical drugs to
produce adverse reactions.

* All metabolites of aspartame (formaldehyde, methanol,
diketopiperazine and formic acid) are toxic to the human body and are
especially toxic to the brain.

* Aspartame comprises over 80 percent of consumer complaints filed
with the FDA.

* The FDA has generated a list of 92 symptoms associated with
aspartame consumption that include nausea, dizziness, irritability,
insanity, blindness, deafness, weight gain and death.

* The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention claim that 500,000
people each year simply "drop dead" for no apparent reason from what
it labels "sudden cardiac death."

* Dementia among all ages (especially the elderly) and learning
disabilities among children, in the U.S. and abroad, have been
skyrocketing since 1981.

As of today, the number of scientific and studies showing that
aspartame is, indeed, an underlying cause of chronic physical and
mental illness and death out number studies proving its safety by at
least 400 to zero. Proof of this fact can also be determined by what
happens in many cases when people stop using aspartame: Their chronic
symptoms disappear.

The legacy

Defense Secretary Rumsfeld was awarded the Presidential Medal of
Freedom by President Gerald Ford-the highest civilian honor in
America-on January 19, 1977. A few months later, Rumsfeld became the
CEO of Searle to secure political approval for a product that science
had proven to be a highly-addictive neurotoxic drug that causes
chronic ill health, brain tumors and death. The evidence indicates
that FDA approval for aspartame was a high-level political priority
undoubtedly connected to its capacity to adversely effect the minds
and bodies of those consuming it.

Because Rumsfeld placed politics above public health and safety,
hundreds of millions of people throughout the world cannot think
clearly and suffer from a variety of chronic illnesses. It is,
therefore, fitting that symptoms associated with aspartame use be
known as "Rumsfeld,s disease."

What is Aspartame?

Aspartame is an artificial sweetener produced by GD Searle, a subsidiary of Monsanto. It is sold under many names, most notably NutraSweet and Equal.

It is a chemical byproduct that, depending on potency tastes 100-400 sweeter than sugar. While attempting to develop an ulcer drug, something that would inhibit the secretion of gastrin, aspartame was "discovered." The research was performed in the mid-60s and experiments on primates were carried out in 1971. Of the seven baby monkeys in the study, one died and five had grand mal seizures. These facts were concealed when Searle submitted its application to the FDA, a pattern that was found to be consistent in 150 Searle studies. Independent studies on mice showed that holes were formed in the brain when consuming aspartic acid. By the mid-70s, aspartame was linked to cancer.

How Dangerous is Aspartame?

Although Monsanto denies the chemical's toxicity, 80-85% of consumers complaints to the FDA about food pertain to aspartame. Symptoms vary enormously: muscle and joint pain, menstrual cramps, ringing in ears, vertigo, nausea, insomnia, severe headaches, blurred vision and slurred speech, memory loss, blindness, mild to seriously suicidal depression, and seizures.

Technically, aspartame is what is known as an "excitotoxin," a drug that stimulates the nervous system and causes such serious damage to the brain that it has been linked to Parkinson's Disease and Alzheimer's, two scourges of modern times. Russell Blaylock, MD, board-certified neurosurgeon and author of Excitotoxins: The Taste That Kills has linked aspartame to brain tumors and neurological degeneration of epidemic proportions.

Aspartame Timeline

1969 - Dr. Harry Waisman fed ASP mixed with milk to monkeys. One died after 300 days of ASP and five others had grand mal seizures. Searle deleted this negative study when the company submitted safety evidence to the FDA.

1970 - The FDA banned cyclamate during the time that the safety of saccharin was being questioned. The time seemed ripe for ASP.

1971 - Dr. John Olney, a research psychiatrist, told Searle that aspartic acid caused "holes in the brains of mice."

1974 - Searle people said these studies raised "no health problems." Searle told the FDA about these findings after approval was granted.

1975 - Many of the test animals fed ASP developed large TUMORS. These were NOT reported to the FDA.

1977 - Despite the many complaints about ASP, William Conlon and Thomas Sullivan, the US attorneys, took no action, in five years the statute of limitations for a grand jury investigation expired. A year later Conlon took a position with the law firm that represents Searle. (U.S. Attorney, Samuel Skinner did the same and ended up Chief of Staff in Bush's White House. ed.)

1980 - A Public Board of Inquiry of three scientists was activated. These (2 MDs and one PhD) voted to ban ASP. Because of those negative findings a five member Commissioner's Team of Scientists was impaneled: Three said ban; two said it was safe. Another member was added. You guessed it: deadlock. Dr. Jacqueline Verrett, PhD, toxicologist on the team said, "Bureau officials were working up to a whitewash. Safety questions remain unanswered."

1981 - Dr. Arthur Hull Hayes, Jr. was appointed the new FDA Commissioner and overuled the Public Board of Inquiry's recommended ban of ASP. He said his approval was part of the Reagan administration's new reform! Throughout the 1980's Searle has pointed out that the best evidence of ASP's safety was the fact that it had been approved in more than 60 countries. But these foreign approvals had been based on these controversial test, and the questionable approval of the FDA. It was approved as a "food additive," and hence, exempt from continued safety monitoring. (Searle is not obligated to monitor any adverse reactions.)

1983 - THE NATIONAL SOFT DRINK ASSOCIATION wrote to the FDA that ASP was breaking down in warm climates. But the Association later accepted ASP. Dr. Hayes office approved the use of ASP in soft drinks just two months before he quit his job as FDA chief. He then obtained a job with a public relations firm who represents NutraSweet.

1984 - Seven million pounds of NutraSweet are swallowed by about 100,000 people.

1985 - Reports of side-effects mount.

1987 - ACSN is founded by Mary Nash Stoddard and consumer advocate, James Turner. They believe ASP should be recalled and retested as a drug.

If a product is approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and composed of natural ingredients, would you assume it is safe to consume?

However, aspartame's tainted history of approval and potentially toxic ingredients cast serious doubt on the safety of this sugar substitute. Furthermore, aspartame may actually increase your appetite (Farber 52).

While the FDA approval may signal the green light for safe consumption, 85 percent of all complaints registered with the FDA are for adverse reactions to aspartame, including five reported deaths. A closer look at the unscientific studies, suspicious approval methods, and its harmful ingredients, reveal the hidden dangers of this artificial sweetener. In reality, aspartame poses a public health threat.

Ailments Resulting From Aspartame

The components of aspartame can lead to a wide variety of ailments. Some of these problems occur gradually while others are immediate, acute reactions.

A few of the many disorders associated with aspartame include the following:

* Birth Defects

A study funded by Monsanto to study possible birth defects caused by consuming aspartame was cut off after preliminary data showed damaging information about aspartame. Additionally, in the book, While Waiting: A Prenatal Guidebook, it is stated that aspartame is suspected of causing brain damage in sensitive individuals. A fetus may be at risk for these effects. Some researchers have suggested that high doses of aspartame may be associated with problems ranging from dizziness and subtle brain changes to mental retardation.

* Cancer (Brain Cancer)

In 1981, an FDA statistician stated that the brain tumor data on aspartame was so "worrisome" that he could not recommend approval of NutraSweet.(14)

In a two-year study conducted by the manufacturer of aspartame, twelve of 320 rats fed a normal diet and aspartame developed brain tumors while none of the control rats developed tumors, and five of the twelve tumors were in rats given a low dose of aspartame.(15)

The approval of aspartame was a violation of the Delaney Amendment, which was supposed to prevent cancer-causing substances such as methanol (formaldehye) and DKP from entering our food supply. A late FDA toxicologist testified before the U.S. Congress that aspartame was capable of producing brain tumors. This made it illegal for the FDA to set an allowable daily intake at any level. He stated in his testimony that Searle's studies were "to a large extent unreliable" and that "at least one of those studies has established beyond any reasonable doubt that aspartame is capable of inducing brain tumors in experimental animals ... " He concluded his testimony by asking, "What is the reason for the apparent refusal by the FDA to invoke for this food additive the so-called Delaney Amendment to the Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act? ... And if the FDA itself elects to violate the law, who is left to protect the health of the public?"(16)

In the mid-1970s it was discovered that the manufacturer of aspartame falsified studies in several ways. One of the techniques used was to cut tumors out of test animals and put them back in the study. Another technique used to falsify the studies was to list animals that had actually died as surviving the study. Thus, the data on brain tumors was likely worse than discussed above. In addition, a former employee of the manufacturer of aspartame told the FDA on July 13, 1977 that the particles of DKP were so large that the rats could discriminate between the DKP and their normal diet.(12)

* Diabetes

The American Diabetes Association (ADA) is actually recommending this chemical poison to persons with diabetes, but according to research conducted by a diabetes specialist, aspartame: 1) Leads to the precipitation of clinical diabetes. 2) Causes poorer diabetic control in diabetics on insulin or oral drugs. 3) Leads to the aggravation of diabetic complications such as retinopathy, cataracts, neuropathy and gastroparesis. 4) Causes convulsions.

In a statement concerning the use of products containing aspartame by persons with diabetes and hypoglycemia, the researchers says:

"Unfortunately, many patients in my practice, and others seen in consultation, developed serious metabolic, neurologic and other complications that could be specifically attributed to using aspartame products. This was evidenced by the loss of diabetic control, the intensification of hypoglycemia, the occurrence of presumed 'insulin reactions' (including convulsions) that proved to be aspartame reactions, and the precipitation, aggravation or simulation of diabetic complications (especially impaired vision and neuropathy) while using these products ... Dramatic improvement of such features after avoiding aspartame, and the prompt predictable recurrence of these problems when the patient resumed aspartame products, knowingly or inadvertently."

Another researcher stated that excitotoxins such as those found in aspartame can precipitate diabetes in persons who are genetically susceptible to the disease.(5)

* Emotional Disorders

In a double blind study of the effects of aspartame on persons with mood disorders, findings showed a large increase in serious symptoms for persons taking aspartame. Since some of the symptoms were so serious, the Institutional Review Board had to stop the study. Three of the participants had said that they had been "poisoned" by aspartame. Researchers concluded that "individuals with mood disorders are particularly sensitive to this artificial sweetener; its use in this population should be discouraged."(18) One researcher stated about aspartame, "I know it causes seizures. I'm convinced also that it definitely causes behavioral changes. I'm very angry that this substance is on the market. I personally question the reliability and validity of any studies funded by the NutraSweet Company."(19)

Additionally, there are numerous reported cases of low brain serotonin levels, depression and other emotional disorders that have been linked to aspartame and often are relieved by stopping the intake of aspartame.

* Epilepsy/Seizures

With the large and growing number of seizures caused by aspartame, it is sad to see that the Epilepsy Foundation is promoting the "safety" of aspartame. At Massachusetts Institute of Technology, 80 people who had suffered seizures after ingesting aspartame were surveyed. Community Nutrition Institute concluded the following about the survey:

"These 80 cases meet the FDA's own definition of an imminent hazard to the public health, which requires the FDA to expeditiously remove a product from the market."

Both the Air Force's magazine, Flying Safety, and the Navy's magazine, Navy Physiology, published articles warning about the many dangers of aspartame including the cumulative delirious effects of methanol and the greater likelihood of birth defects. The articles note that the ingestion of aspartame can make pilots more susceptible to seizures and vertigo. Twenty articles sounding warnings about ingesting aspartame while flying have also appeared in the National Business Aircraft Association Digest (NBAA Digest 1993), Aviation Medical Bulletin (1988), The Aviation Consumer (1988), Canadian General Aviation News (1990), Pacific Flyer (1988), General Aviation News (1989), Aviation Safety Digest (1989), and Plane & Pilot (1990) and a paper warning about aspartame was presented at the 57th Annual Meeting of the Aerospace Medical Association (Gaffney 1986).

A hotline was even set up for pilots suffering from acute reactions to aspartame ingestion. Over 600 pilots have reported symptoms including some who have reported suffering grand mal seizures in the cockpit due to aspartame.(21)

Why don't we hear about these things?

The reason many people do not hear about serious reactions to aspartame is twofold: 1) Lack of awareness by the general population. Aspartame-caused diseases are not reported in the newspapers like plane crashes. This is because these incidents occur one at a time in thousands of different locations across the United States. 2) Most people do not associate their symptoms with the long-term use of aspartame. For the people who have killed a significant percentage of their brain cells and thereby caused a chronic illness, there is no way that they would normally associate such an illness with aspartame consumption.

How aspartame was approved is a lesson in how chemical and pharmaceutical companies can manipulate government agencies such as the FDA, "bribe" organizations such as the American Dietetic Association, and flood the scientific community with flawed and fraudulent industry-sponsored studies funded by the makers of aspartame.

Erik Millstone, a researcher at the Science Policy Research Unit of Sussex University has compiled thousands of pages of evidence, some of which have been obtained using the freedom of information act 23, showing: 1. Laboratory tests were faked and dangers were concealed. 2. Tumors were removed from animals and animals that had died were "restored to life" in laboratory records. 3. False and misleading statements were made to the FDA. 4. The two US Attorneys given the task of bringing fraud charges against the aspartame manufacturer took positions with the manufacturer's law firm, letting the statute of limitations run out. 5. The Commissioner of the FDA overruled the objections of the FDA's own scientific board of inquiry. Shortly after that decision, he took a position with Burson-Marsteller, the firm in charge of public relations for G.D. Searle.

A Public Board of Inquiry (PBOI) was conducted in 1980. There were three scientists who reviewed the objections of Olney and Turner to the approval of aspartame. They voted unanimously against aspartame's approval. The FDA Commissioner, Dr Arthur Hull Hayes, Jr. then created a 5-person Scientific Commission to review the PBOI findings. After it became clear that the Commission would uphold the PBOI's decision by a vote of 3 to 2, another person was added to the Commission, creating a deadlocked vote. This allowed the FDA Commissioner to break the deadlock and approve aspartame for dry goods in 1981. Dr Jacqueline Verrett, the Senior Scientist in an FDA Bureau of Foods review team created in August 1977 to review the Bressler Report (a report that detailed G.D. Searle's abuses during the pre-approval testing) said: "It was pretty obvious that somewhere along the line, the bureau officials were working up to a whitewash." In 1987, Verrett testified before the US Senate stating that the experiments conducted by Searle were a "disaster." She stated that her team was instructed not to comment on or be concerned with the overall validity of the studies. She stated that questions about birth defects have not been answered. She continued her testimony by discussing the fact that DKP has been shown to increase uterine polyps and change blood cholesterol and that increasing the temperature of the product leads to an increase in production of DKP.(13)

Revolving Doors

The FDA and the manufacturers of aspartame have had a revolving door of employment for many years. In addition to the FDA Commissioner and two US Attorneys leaving to take positions with companies connected with G.D. Searle, four other FDA officials connected with the approval of aspartame took positions connected with the NutraSweet industry between 1979 and 1982 including the Deputy FDA Commissioner, the Special Assistant to the FDA Commissioner, the Associate Director of the Bureau of Foods and Toxicology and the Attorney involved with the Public Board of Inquiry.(24)

It is important to realize that this type of revolving-door activity has been going on for decades. The Townsend Letter for Doctors (11/92) reported on a study revealing that 37 of 49 top FDA officials who left the FDA took positions with companies they had regulated. They also reported that over 150 FDA officials owned stock in drug companies they were assigned to manage. Many organizations and universities receive large sums of money from companies connected to the NutraSweet Association, a group of companies promoting the use of aspartame. In January 1993, the American Dietetic Association received a US$75,000 grant from the NutraSweet Company. The American Dietetic Association has stated that the NutraSweet Company writes their "Facts" sheets.(25)

What is the FDA doing to protect the consumer from the dangers of aspartame?

Less than nothing.

In 1992, the FDA approved aspartame for use in malt beverages, breakfast cereals, and refrigerated puddings and fillings. In 1993 the FDA approved aspartame for use in hard and soft candies, non-alcoholic favored beverages, tea beverages, fruit juices and concentrates, baked goods and baking mixes, and frostings, toppings and fillings for baked goods.

In 1991, the FDA banned the importation of stevia. The powder of this leaf has been used for hundreds of years as an alternative sweetener. It is used widely in Japan with no adverse effects. Scientists involved in reviewing stevia have declared it to be safe for human consumption--something that has been well known in many parts of the world where it is not banned. Some people believe that stevia was banned to keep the product from taking hold in the United States and cutting into sales of aspartame.(26)

NZFSA and New Zealand Nutrition Foundation Short on Credibility.

"It is time people retired or were fired from the New Zealand Food Safety Authority (NZFSA) so New Zealanders might be given independent and reliable information about food safety," said Soil & Health spokesperson Steffan Browning today, adding that, "the New Zealand Nutrition Foundation was also a food industry mouthpiece lacking credibility."

If you consume the artificial sweetener aspartame—also known by the brand names NutraSweet and Equal—you may be making a deadly mistake.

A recent study by the Ramazzini Foundation concluded that aspartame was directly related to an increased risk of developing leukemia, lymphoma and breast cancer.

In the study, rats were fed between 20 and 100 milligrams of aspartame per kilogram of body weight in order to mimic the amount of the sweetener some humans would consume. The lower dosage can be compared to a 50 lb child drinking 2.5 cans of Diet Pepsi or Diet Coke each day, and a 150 lb adult drinking 7.5 cans. The study found that even the rats fed the lower dose of aspartame were more prone to develop cancer.

Don't think you're off the hook because you only drink a couple diet beverages a day. Aspartame is also found in many other food products, such as sugar-free candy, chewing gum and dessert, instant breakfasts, wine coolers, yogurt, gelatin, juice beverages, and even over-the-counter and prescription drugs (listed under "inactive ingredients").
